Bathroom tiles are not just for floors but for walls as well. Tiling the bathroom wall can be just as difficult and as complicated as tiling the floor. It requires careful planning, designing, and preparation.

To start, identify the type and size of the tiles you want to use. Some of the popular tile choices are ceramic, marble, porcelain, and limestone. Small tiles have in the past been the more popular for modern design, but more and more people are tending to use larger tiles with varying patterns.  Standard four by four square wall tiles are slowly becoming outdated. Tiles of choice these days are rectangular wall tiles measuring 12x8 inches wide, and the modular tiles measuring 6x6 inches, 12x12 inches, and 12x6 inches – all of which can be mixed and matched to make unique patterns.

Once you have decided on the type and size of tiles you want to use, you can move on to identifying the next the part of the bathroom that you want to emphasize. Choose a focal point. Some of the bathroom areas that you can highlight are the shower stall, the front portion of the vanity, and the deck around the tub.

There are countless tile design options that you can choose from. Handcrafted porcelain wall tiles and glass tiles, for example, are two of the more popular bathroom tiles today. There are also decorative tiles for bordering, which come in a variety of designs such as floral, nautical, and country. They usually come in the standard size of two inches high by six inches wide.

Gone are the days of tiles with shiny finishes which were very popular before. The trend is moving towards tiles with rustic or matte finishes.  People who use stone tiles usually prefer honed limestone and tumbled marble because they offer a casual look that complements the softness of earth tones. They also feature appealing irregular shapes in muted designs.

Some of the popular tile designs that you can choose from are earth-toned tiles in camel, cream, or sage; ceramic tiles with patterns resembling natural stones; tumbled marble with an Old World theme; real granite; and metal or glass tiles with random accents and full borders.
 
If you can’t zero in on a specific design, why not combine different tiles together? For example, ceramic tiles can be used together with natural materials such as limestone, marble, or granite. Glass, on the other hand, can work well with marble and limestone. Just make sure you properly blend the shades, color tones, and textures to create an appealing wall tile design.

Price range for bathroom wall tiles

Ceramic tiles usually cost $1 to $5 per square foot, while decorative and hand-painted tiles can cost $25 per square foot. Tiles made of natural stone such as granite, marble, and limestone, are often sold at $5 to $20 per square foot. Glass tiles are the most expensive—they cost anywhere between $25 and $50 per square foot.
