Shower doors are an essential part of bathroom showers – in fact, the wrong type of door can render even the most advanced enclosure useless. Doors must keep the enclosure tightly sealed, especially in steam shower enclosures, because steam usually causes the most damage in a bathroom. Today's shower doors are both stylish and functional, and are available in a variety of styles and materials. This article lists down some of the most popular choices. Sliding doors Sliding doors are designed to slide sideways along a rail, parallel to the walls. They are the most commonly used type, mainly because they are space-saving and easy to use. Their main advantage is that they do not need extra room to open or close, unlike hinged doors. They are especially useful for small bathrooms or tight spaces, where space-saving is a must. Combined shower and bathtub enclosures can also benefit from sliding doors. One disadvantage is that the slide tracks require regular cleaning, because they tend to collect dirt and oil. Folding doors These doors are attached to the door frame using movable hinges. They are either pleated or segmented, which allows them to stretch and compress along the tracks. This design creates a unique, elegant look and is great for adding texture against a smooth glass enclosure. Installation is fairly easy and flexible; you can set them to slide in one or both directions or put stoppers along the tracks to control the door opening. Folding doors require more space than sliding doors, although they still have a significant advantage over side-hinged doors. If you choose a single-direction installation, make sure the door opens outward to maximize space inside the cubicle. You also need to clear the door's path to make sure it does not hit anything when opening, such as a sink or towel bar. They are made up of two sections hinged to the door frame, which can be pulled from one or both sides to open or close the door. Although the name suggests only two folds, it is also possible to install multi-fold doors in the same style. One of their main advantages is lower maintenance, since there are no slide tracks that require frequent cleaning. They can also be installed in barrier-free style to accommodate disabled or elderly users. Frameless doors Frameless shower doors are made entirely of glass, creating a smooth, seamless look characteristic of modern minimalist design. They are another excellent choice for small bathrooms, because they make the shower area appear bigger. Because there are no frames, there is no room for dirt and moisture to accumulate, making them convenient and low-maintenance as well. |
