Bathroom Design Trends

While a simple, classic look is sure to work for any bathroom, it's the trendy and unconventional ones that often stand out. The trend these days is a more edgy, modern look that is worlds away from the tried-and-tested white porcelain and ceramic. The following list can help you keep up and give you some new ideas for your own bathroom.

Large bathrooms are in

Large BathroomToday's bathroom is more than a place to get clean – it's a place to rest and relax. Bathroom owners put a premium on comfort and style as much as function. More people are putting the shower and bathtub in separate places, and making room for chaise lounges and specialized bathroom furniture. Some are even installing televisions, sound systems and reading areas.

Fixtures are more functional and decorative

It's easier to personalize your bathroom fixtures nowadays, as they are often sold separately and you have more choices with each fixture. You can choose between a clear or enclosed shower area, or freestanding bath or a whirlpool. Bathroom designers are also turning fixtures into functional artisan crafts. For instance, countertop sinks are moving into bolder colors and shapes, such as jewel-toned, glass basin models. Vintage furniture and vanity tables are also a popular choice.

Comfort comes first

Comfort comes first when it comes to baths. The American Standard Bathroom Habits Survey reports that whirlpools are by far the most popular bath choice among Americans, especially with today's ergonomic designs and well-positioned massage jets. Bathtubs are also being designed after furniture to a more homey and comfortable feel. Some are large enough for two, encased in wood frames, and feature well-shaped, ergonomic designs.

Experiment with materials

Ceramic fixtures and tiled floors are making way for wood, glass, china, chrome, and other materials once deemed impractical for bathrooms. Glass and chrome are especially popular, especially with above-counter sinks. There are even glass tiles in ocean colors, which lend a calm, peaceful mood to the bath. The trick is to combine materials to achieve a great-looking but affordable look – accent glass tiles with porcelain to lower costs, soften stainless steel fixtures with a stone accent, or frame wood drawers with chrome or marble to make them sturdier.

Use bolder colors

Color ChartHomeowners and designers are veering away from the traditional whites and pastels, and experimenting with deeper, bolder colors that can be as timeless as white or cream. Some popular colors are red, blue, and deep green. If you find a specific color too bold, you don't have to use it for the entire bathroom – a hand-painted sink or decorative tile will do. A professional designer can help you decide on a design that best fits your tastes.
