How to renovate a small bathroom |
![]() The first tip when renovating a small bathroom is to choose only a few colors. Never try to use more than two or three colors at most. Because the bathroom is very small, you need to have a consistent effect, or it will just not look right. Decide on your pattern, color scheme or texture and then stick with that. Don’t try to add other colors to the mix or the end result will not be professional. While you are choosing the color scheme and texture for your small bathroom, remember to use light and pastel colors. This is really important in a small bathroom. If you choose darker colors then the overall effect with is a very dull, un-relaxing space. This is not what you want. Remember that a small bathroom is harder to light, so you need to make this easier with the colors that you choose. Because the bathroom area is small, a good idea is to use stripes on the wall, or wallpaper if you decide. The stripes should run vertically up the walls in order to give the illusion of a larger space. If you want to use a border, then place this at the top, near the ceiling so that people’s eyes are drawn towards it. If you can, install a skylight into the small bathroom. This will immediately bring in more light and increase the sense of space. It also gives a more relaxing feeling to the bathroom. Along the same lines, you need to make use of mirrors in order to reflect and bounce light around the bathroom. This is not difficult to do, it just requires the correct placement of the mirror. You can use a clear glass tub or a shower enclosure to increase the perception of space again. This also helps to reflect light and gives the effect you are looking for. If you have bulky features in the small bathroom then you need to replace them with smaller and slimmer units. One of the main culprits is usually the vanity unit. If your vanity unit is old then it is probably very big and taking up too much space. You should remove it and buy a much slimmer version with a contemporary design. This alone can drastically affect the appearance of your bathroom. Another idea is to remove any units that you have on the floor and mount them on the wall. An increase in floor space really alters the look of a small bathroom. This is a simple step to take, but it makes a big difference. If you have shelves that protrude into the walking areas, think about moving them higher up, out of the way. Alternatively you can use towel racks which save a lot of space. If you take these things into consideration when renovating your small bathroom I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the finish you will produce. Simple steps make a big overall difference and you will have much more space and light, creating a more inviting bathroom. |
