Ceramic Bathroom Tiles

Ceramic tiles are the most popular bathroom floor and wall covering systems. They come in a wide variety of creative patterns and designs, as well as offer excellent protection against the damages caused by water and high humidity.

Advantages and disadvantages of ceramic bathroom tiles

Ceramic TilesUnlike other bathroom tiles made of natural materials, ceramic tiles are designed to withstand extreme temperatures without fading, warping, or discoloring. They also offer superior resistance against temperature changes, unlike metallic tiles that easily get hot or cold. This means that even in the summers, ceramic bathroom tiles will remain cool. In fact, many swimming pool manufacturers are now considering the use of ceramic tiles in swimming pools, as they have been proven to remain cool and comfortable to the touch even under the heat of the sun.

Ceramic tiles are versatile, as they come in different colors, sizes, shapes, and designs. They can create just about any kind of look for your bathroom. You can even have them custom made according to your specifications and personal tastes.

Ceramic tiles are generally easy to clean. They do not require the use of special cleaning agents; common bathroom cleansers and bleach are enough to maintain them. They are durable enough to prevent discoloration and the damages caused by bleach, scouring agents, and disinfectants. This property makes ceramic tiles ideal for high-traffic areas.

However, ceramic tiles also have their drawbacks. One of them is their cold feel that can be uncomfortable to the skin. It is a good thing it can be easily remedied by using an electric heating element to keep the tiles warm at all times. You can also cover some portions of your bathroom floor with thick and fluffy rugs.

Another disadvantage of ceramic tiles is their susceptibility to mold growth along the grout lines. When this happens, cleaning the tiles and the grout lines can become very difficult because molds usually penetrate underneath the grout surface. The only way to eliminate them is by scraping the grout off and doing a reapplication. You can use an extractor fan, which is designed to lessen condensation, in the bathroom to help reduce the growth and development of molds.

Choosing ceramic bathroom tiles

Choosing the right ceramic bathroom tiles is easy. All you have to do is follow the guidelines listed below.

  • Choose ceramic tiles with smooth surfaces. They should have straight and flush edges to make the application of grout easy.
  • Use small ceramic tiles, around eight by eight inches or smaller, for bathroom walls and countertops. Use large tiles for bathroom floors.
  • Do not get ceramic tiles with reflective surfaces or a bright, glazed finish for your bathroom floor. They are not very resistant to abrasions, and they often pose slip hazards.
