Eco-Friendly Recycled Glass Tiles

Recycled Glass TilesUsing eco-friendly recycled glass tiles is a great way to liven up your bathroom or kitchen while keeping the costs down and reducing waste and environmental damage as well. These tiles are made from used glass that has been molted and reshaped. They come in almost any color and design, and are highly customizable – you can have your manufacturer mix the exact shade you want, choose from a wide range of finishes, and even add personalized designs. But recycled glass tiles aren’t just cheap and pretty – they’re also durable, versatile, and long-lasting. Read on to find out why recycled glass tiles may be the best choice for your home.

Use them anywhere

Recycled glass tiles are naturally water-resistant, which makes them ideal for countertops, bathroom walls, and showers. The higher quality tiles are also resistant to extreme heat and cold, so you can also use them for outdoor pools. You can also size them to the right weight for vertical applications, such as on walls and countertop splash guards. Their bright, translucent colors also make great accents for plain white walls.

Wipe them clean

The smooth, non-absorbent surface of glass tiles makes them highly resistant to stains and spotting. Paint, mud, and other common stains will stay on the surface and will not discolor the tile, which is a common problem with ceramic, wood, and other more porous tiles. Most tiles can be removed by wiping with a glass cleaner. You will have to watch out for stains on the grout lines, though. Grout is very porous and will stain easily. You can minimize grout stains by using larger tiles to create fewer grout lines, or using colored grout to match your tile’s colors.

Repair and reuse

When you break a tile, you usually have to scout the stores for an exact match, or settle for the closest color, which, in many cases, is still very noticeable and distracting. Glass tiles, on the other hand, are fully recyclable. This means that if you break a tile, you can easily have it remolded and reinstalled. If this is not possible, you can still get a matching tile by having one custom-blended. You can even have them remade into ornaments, decorative tiles, or accent tiles to create a different look.

Play with the light

Glass tiles naturally reflect light, so a small glass-tiled surface can multiply available light enough to illuminate a room. This allows you to save energy costs by minimizing your use of light bulbs or lamps, or allowing you to dim them when necessary. You can even experiment with different glass tile surfaces for a more artistic look. A crackle glass finish will diffuse light in random directions for a wild, dreamy feel, while a grooved surface will create a clean, spotlight effect.
