Accessible bathroom design using movable fixtures

Household bathrooms are used not only by an individual but also by several people with different needs. To fuse together ideas on versatility and style in creating a multi-functional bathroom, the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access has created two bathroom styles to address the problem of bathroom accessibility.

Movable fixtures bathroom

One such bathroom design made by the Center is the movable fixtures bathroom. This type of bathroom consists of a movable sink and a movable shower that moves along the bathroom wall to suit a specific user’s needs. The movable fixtures bathroom is made possible by innovations in drain and plumbing technology.

Movable fixtures allow the bathroom adjust to the user’s needs and not the other way around. With an adjustable sink and shower, the user can freely move around regardless of body size. The height of the shower and sink can also be adjusted to adapt to adult or child users, as well as to sitting or standing bathroom users.

Movable panels bathroom

Another innovative accessible bathroom design created by the Center is the movable panels bathroom. This system consists of three parts: a shower, a lavatory, and a toilet. Each part is a fully functional with accessories essential for performing different bathroom activities such as lighting, a sink, a work surface, a storage area, mirrors, electricity, and running water.

Each movable panel bathroom part can be adjusted according to height and space requirements. This bathroom design also offers a support system made up of grab bars for storage, structure, and support purposes.

Benefits of accessible bathroom designs

1. Adaptability

An accessible bathroom designs can be installed as a whole system for developing bare bathrooms. This allows professional installers and future owners to decide on the best bathroom layout to suit specific needs and preferences.

For owners with existing bathroom fixtures, an accessible bathroom design can be adapted to pre-existing fittings. Depending on the owner’s preferences, only some of the fittings or a combination of several units of an accessible bathroom design can be installed. When used this way, installation costs can be kept to a minimum.

An accessible bathroom design can also be used in bathrooms with different sizes. The Center has already tested their design on a compact five feet by eight feet bathroom to test for efficiency and usability.

2. Best fit

The bathroom adapts to the user with an accessible bathroom design. Because of the strategically placed fixtures, cleverly constructed wall paneling, and innovative drain and plumbing technology, one bathroom can cater to everyone’s needs whether they are young or old, capable or disabled.

3. Customization

Like most bathroom designs, an accessible bathroom design can also be constructed to suit the user’s preference and bathroom space. The choices for bathroom tile design, showerhead system, toilet bowl color, lighting, and cabinetry are still considered in an accessible bathroom design.

4. Population group unification

When an accessible bathroom design is used in public bathrooms such as those found in shopping malls, schools, restaurants, and offices, more people, regardless of age or handicap, could easily use the bathrooms. Given the proper guidance, different population groups can benefit from an accessible bathroom design depending on their preferences and needs.
