Elegant Doorless Showers

Doorless showers are contemporary bathroom designs that revolutionize the way we take showers, making the term “enclosure” relative and expanding the notion of showering as a confined act.  Doorless showers offer practical yet stylish designs that can add a sleek, elegant look to your bathroom. Below are some of the pros and cons of doorless showers, and some design tips.

Why should you get a doorless shower
Aesthetics seems to be the main reason that people prefer doorless showers. A doorless shower provides a more liberal, contemporary, and even spa-like feel. You have more choices in wall material such as glass blocks, acrylic, or fiberglass. It also provides a sense of freedom, fun, or playfulness, especially for couples sharing the same bathroom.

But doorless showers also have practical advantages. For instance, they make great space-saving enclosures because you don't have to leave out space for swing-out doors. This means you can expand the shower area to include two or more shower heads.

Safety is another important advantage. The doorless shower is also often a walk-in shower, which is designed to aid handicapped or elderly people. With a doorless shower, they don't have to step over elevated entrances, reducing the risk of tripping and bumping into fixtures. There is also lower risk of getting locked in.

Why you may not want a doorless shower

For people who have just encountered the term, the idea of doorless showers may seem impractical and pointless. Various reasons are given for why doorless showers are not a good idea: one is that it causes water sprays, making the floor slippery and increasing the risk of falls; another is that it allows the draft or cold to come in, which beats the purpose of a nice, warm shower. For others, it simply removes the sense of privacy, even if there's a bathroom door.  There are also trivial reasons such as destroying the acoustics and ruining pipe-in music, or even affecting one's bathroom singing voice!

Elegant doorless shower designs
There are various doorless shower designs that are both practical and elegant. One of the most popular is the G-shaped shower, which has a “labyrinth” shell-shaped entry with a small half. These are designed to confine the water and keep it from splashing out of the entryway and onto the bathroom floor.  Another popular design is a trapezoid setup, which has an angled opening and one side longer than the other.  There is also the free-standing shower enclosure with thick glass panels, which usually as a back wall to confine the water. This makes the entryway available on either sides, making it a very accessible, “true walk-in” shower. Its translucent panels allow the warm sun to get in, opens the showers onto the room, expands it to the adjacent space, and allows easier entry and exit.
