Shower Curtains or Shower Doors?

Should you get a shower curtain or a shower door? Here are some ideas to help you decide.

Your budget

Shower doors are definitely more expensive than shower curtains. A basic sliding door usually starts at $400, while shower curtains cost as low as $17. Most bathroom doors also have to be installed professionally, which means that you have to pay extra labor costs. This is not the case for shower curtains – just hang them and you’re done. So if you are living in a starter home and do not have much to spend on decorations and renovations, then a curtain shower is probably best. They’re cheap, easy to replace, and much easier to install.

Maintenance

Both shower curtains and shower doors are washable. All you need is a good scrubber, cleanser, and water to remove dirt.

However, shower curtains are a bit more difficult to maintain as they tend to accumulate mold and mildew. Once they get very dirty, it may be better to replace them altogether, which can up your maintenance costs. Shower doors, on the other hand, are more resistant to molds and tend to last longer than shower curtains. If your house is a keeper and you intend to stay in it for a long time, then it may be wiser to invest in shower doors, which will surely last for years.

Choices

Manufacturers of shower doors and curtains are ready to give you a variety of choices depending on the functions you require and the look you are going for. Here are just some of the latest trends that you might want to take into consideration as you choose between curtains or doors.

Hookless shower curtains

One of the main complaints of shower curtain owners is that the curtain’s hooks tend to get stuck after a while, making it difficult to open and close the curtain. Some manufacturers have already solved this problem by developing hookless shower curtains, which attach to existing rods either with built-in split-rings or ties. Other manufacturers use simpler snaps, buttons, and even Velcro. Each of these types of shower curtains have drawbacks, but they can certainly save you from fumbling with hooks.

Frameless shower doors

If you are going for a seamless look in your bathroom, you will be happy to know that there are now a lot of more affordable frameless shower doors. Not only do these doors look better – they actually let in more light into your shower area and creates an illusion of bigger space. And because they do not have frames that tend to be the hiding places of molds, these doors are much easier to maintain. Just wipe them down and they’re good to go.
