Tub and Shower Enclosures

Most homeowners are now getting bathtub and shower combination units because of their versatility and functionality, as they satisfy two distinct bathroom needs using the same space. A common problem with using these units, however, is the unwanted yet unavoidable splashing of water onto the bathroom floor, walls, and vanities because of their low sides. To eliminate this problem, homeowners are advised to use tub and shower enclosures.

Tub and shower enclosures are essential bathroom equipment designed to enclose the bathtub and shower combo units with durable and protective structures made of tiles, fiberglass, acrylic, or glass. They not only prevent water from splashing onto the bathroom floor, they also provide privacy and security to the user. These enclosures are also ideal for steam-ready shower systems, trapping heat and steam inside the unit for an effective steam bathing.

Tub and shower enclosures are large and bulky. They also require constant cleaning and maintenance.

Types of tub and shower enclosures

Tub and shower enclosures are available in two main types according to construction: one-piece tub and shower enclosures and sectional tub and shower enclosures.

One-piece tub and shower enclosures are wide, single units designed to enclose bathtub and shower combo units completely. Simple and functional, they have the advantage of being 100% leak-free when installed properly. They are commonly made of acrylic and fiberglass. However, their colors can fade easily with frequent use. They also require a great amount of polish to maintain their look and sturdiness.

One-piece tub and shower enclosures are heavier and bulkier than sectional enclosures; hence, they require more floor space. They are not ideal for bathroom remodeling because they do not fit easily through standard-sized bathroom doorways.

Sectional tub and shower enclosures, on the other hand, are made up of several pieces of enclosures attached to one another to completely surround bathtub and shower combo units. They look like one-piece units when installed. Since they are smaller and less bulky than one-piece enclosures, they can fit through most doorways, making them suitable for bathroom remodeling. They can be adjusted to fit out-of-plumb walls and accommodate uneven surfaces. They are watertight and easy to clean.

Choosing tub and shower enclosures

For durability and long-lasting use, choose a tub and shower enclosure made of fiberglass. Avoid getting a tile enclosure as it tends to harbor the growth of mildew, mold, and other bacteria that may damage both your bathtub and shower. If your tub and shower combo unit has an uncommon shape, have it installed with a custom glass enclosure that can be cut to a size that fits your unit’s specifications.

Depending on your bathroom decor and personal preference, you have many tub and shower enclosure frames to choose from including a traditional framed design and a modern frameless style. The frameless has a more fashionable appeal that provides a cotemporary look to your bathroom.
